Meet the Sight Words DVD From Preschool Prep

Big Blood brother typically watches thirty-45 minutes of Boob tube each day, sometimes a picayune more and sometimes none at all. It is a user-friendly lark when I am trying to get ready in the morning or set dinner in the afternoons and can't give him my undivided attention. Although I believe that hands-on experiences will Ever trump any multimedia learning (including TV and video games), I do believe that technology can be a resources to help children over the historic period of 2 learn diverse concepts, like "Meet the Sight Words". Like all things, nevertheless, moderation is key!

Run into the Sight Words Review

The Preschool Prep Visitor sent me the first "See the Sight Words" DVD to review.

What are sight words?

Sight Words (also known as high-frequency words) are words that children should learn to automatically recognize about the time that they are starting schoolhouse or when first learning to read. Recognition of sight words is but i component in a counterbalanced literacy program. The purpose of having children larn to automatically recognize some words is because many of these words don't play by the phonetic rules and therefore children cannot "sound out" the words to read them. They also tend to occur often (examples:  a, and, the, of, is).

Encounter the Sight Words DVD by Preschool Prep

I was somewhat familiar with this visitor considering we have the "Meet the Colors" DVD already that Big Brother really enjoys. This "Meet the Sight Words" DVD serial relies on repetition to help teach your child–the sights words are repeated throughout the video and those words are the only words spoken.

"Meet the Sight Words" also show the sight words in dissimilar sizes and fonts while repeating the word aloud over and over. Subsequently introducing the sight word in print, it so switches to a type of cartoon involving the actual word doing an action. Even though I honestly feel that Big Blood brother is besides immature to learn sight words,  I permit him watch it with me. He loved it and has watched information technology a couple times since!

What I really like near Run into The Sight Words:

• At the beginning of the DVD, there is a short introduction for parents on what exactly sight words are. I especially appreciated the role in the video where the announcer said, "Fifty-fifty if your kid recognizes sight words, this does not mean she can read." Sometime nosotros equate memorization for cognition and understanding–this is not usually the case!
• There is a setting on the DVD that allows you to only show a few words at a time–perfect for classrooms or short sight word do.
• The "characters" (sight words) are entertaining and captivating for young children!
• Y'all can change the sight word "a" to the style we actually write (and teach) the letter "a" or you can accept it be the printed "a" that is seen in books.

Instruction Sight Words To Your Child

I wish this DVD would accept been available when I was teaching! I would accept loved to recommend it to some of the parents of my students who struggled with sight-word recognition.

Something I'k not crazy about, though:

• This DVD is labeled appropriate for 15 months-half dozen years. I personally think that this is not developmentally appropriate for a 15-month old child. In my humble opinion, children do not need to acquire sight words until they have already learned all of the letters and the sounds. Therefore, I would recommend this DVD being geared for children iv-7 years of age.

In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states here that,

"Pediatricians should urge parents to avoid television viewing for children nether the age of 2 years. Although certain television programs may be promoted to this age group, research on early brain development shows that babies and toddlers have a critical need for direct interactions with parents and other significant care givers (eg, child care providers) for good for you brain growth and the development of advisable social, emotional, and cognitive skills. Therefore, exposing such young children to television programs should exist discouraged."

The skilful news for your child between the ages of 2 and 4, however, is that Preschool Prep has other DVD'southward likewise–on letters, numbers, shapes, and colors! So even though this detail video might non entreatment to your younger child, these others probably will. Big Brother loves the "Run into the Colors" DVD!

What Some other Teacher Friend Thought of Meet the Sight Words

I also had my sweetness friend Rachel, a former 2nd grade teacher who now has a 4-year old daughter and 2-twelvemonth old son, preview the movie with her kids and give me her feedback as well. Her four-year old loved it and watched the entire affair, paying special attention to the scenes and characters and concentrating more than on those than the actual words. Her son watched the beginning 2 words and and so lost interest. She felt that the video was a very creative tool that older preschoolers and kindergartners could definitely do good from. She agreed with me that the advisable age would be three-4 years and upwardly. She also commented that information technology would probably take multiple viewings of this video to really "memorize" the sight words.

Would I recommend Encounter The Sight Words?

Lesser Line :  I call up "Run across the Sight Words" is a wonderful and artistic resources for parents of children 4 years and older.

Make sure it is just one way that you help your child larn sight words though–young children need lots of exposure in a variety of different settings. Other ways y'all can help your child learn sight words is by pointing them out while reading or making up games involving sight words (like BINGO).
